Synopsis
In June of 2012, Filipe Masetti Leite, a Brazilian journalist based out of Toronto, will set out on the most daring journey of the 21st Century. The second-generation cowboy will ride two horses through 11 countries in North, Central and South America - a lifelong dream passed down by his father and inspired by Aime Tschiffelly’s 1925 ride from Argentina to New York. Filipe is travelling horseback to explore, learn and engulf himself in the simplicity of a “natural way of life.” In an age where time seems to emulate the speed of the internet, the 24-year-old will travel on one of the slowest forms of transportation - Riding through small towns, villages and major cities, he will speak to locals to learn their stories; sharing the most compelling narratives he finds. Once every two months a 10-minute short film will be produced and uploaded to the journey’s website highlighting a different project & person(s). The framework can be seen through Filipe’s most recent work, “The Road to Dago” - A Documentary that focuses on the impact one woman, living with HIV/AIDS, is having on her community in rural Western Kenya. When Filipe arrives in Brazil the footage and interviews captured during the two-year Journey will be edited into a 120-minute full length Documentary. Alongside the Canadian NGO Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), Filipe will be visiting different journalism programs in Universities along the way. Through public lectures, he will ask students what human rights issues plague their communities while also discussing different ways of raising awareness through the media. With the ultimate goal of seeing new JHR chapters spring-up throughout the America’s.
Although Filipe is riding for Human Rights, his horses will be promoting a different cause. The two heroes of this Journey will be trekking for the welfare and respect these animals deserve. Whenever speaking to the Media, Universities or people he meets along the way, Filipe will always stress the importance horses have had on our evolution in the America’s and the different issues they face today.
